Shuqun Primary School SAYeh! 2010 Journey

Shuqun Primary School’s YOG 2010 journey did not start only when we knew that Singapore was in the bidding race to host the inaugural Youth Olympic Games. All along, through PE lessons and our extensive CCA programmes, we have been inculcating in our Shuqunites values of Excellence, Respect and Friendship. These 3 Olympic values closely mirror our school values of Excellence, Respect and Cooperation.

Over the years we have nurtured a sporting culture that is evident in soccer and sepak takraw. This year, 2009, we have achieved the Sustained Achievement Award for Sports. Shuqun Primary is also well known in the Jurong community for offering niche CCAs rarely found in primary schools, such as Sailing, Ice Skating, Golf and ODAC (Outdoor and Adventure Club). We are also happy to note that an alumnus of our school, Chuah Jun Ler, who graduated in 2007, represented Singapore in windsurfing in the 1st Asian Youth Games. We are especially proud that he has been chosen for this honour because he was from the pioneer batches of Shuqunite sailors.

SAYeh! 2010 encapsulates Shuqunites’ YOG vision in a familiar phrase, ‘Say Yeh!’ which stands for Shuqun Arena for YOG in Every Heart. We hope every Shuqunite will find their personal experiences meaningful in this SAYeh! 2010 journey.

As we move on, Shuqun Primary School strives to instill in our pupils a spirit of Olympism by giving them the exposure to learn from and participate in an international event like the Youth Olympic Games. It is a journey that does not just end at the 2010 Youth Olympic Games but will be passed on to future generations of Shuqunites like a flaming torch. We welcome everyone to join us in this journey of learning and friendship. We are in. Are you?

Our Support for Singapore’s bid to host the inaugural Youth Olympic Games

2170 members of Shuqun Primary Community were physically present to support Singapore's bid to host the International Youth Olympics Games. Behind each of them are their family members, relatives and friends. All these moments were captured and proudly printed on a giant banner prominently displayed outside the school fence along Jurong West St 51.

Olympic Day Run 2008

On 10th September 2008, 4 staff and 30 pupils from various primary 3 – 5 classes participated in the Olympic Day Run 2008 held at West Coast Park. The 2-kilometre fun run was flagged off by Ms Grace Fu, Senior Minister of State, Ministry of National Development and Ministry of Education. Our students happily ran on while carrying our Shuqun flag up high. Everyone completed the run and received a certificate of participation from the Singapore National Olympic Committee. This year’s Olympic Day Run marks the year when Beijing hosted the 2008 Summer Olympics from 8th August – 24th August 2008.

Lower Primary Sports Day 2008

In conjunction with the opening ceremony for the Beijing Olympics, our theme for sports day this year was Shuqun – Olympia. With Olympic fever in the air, close to 700 pupils from the 3 Houses, and 300 parents turned up for this yearly event. Games such as the Torch and Hurdles Relay bore great significance to our Olympic theme. Our guest of honour, Mr Tan Peng Kheok, Honourary Member, Seh Chuan-Shuqun Alumni declared the Sports Day opened. Intermittent blasts of ‘We Are The Champions’ from our loudspeakers hyped our pupils further. Pupils and parents alike were seen jumping and cheering as they could no longer contain their excitement. There were loud cheers as pupils representing their Houses ran through the races. With the Blue House as the overall champions again, we ended the Lower Primary Sports Day with huge party poppers and a great bang.

SAYeh! 2010 Opening Ceremony Nov 2008

On the official opening ceremony of SAYeh! 2010 Gallery, we had the honour of having Mr Teo Ser Luck, Senior Parliamentary Secretary, Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports and Ministry of Transport to officiate the opening of the gallery and also grace the special occasion of our graduating cohort of 2008. Every pupil and staff pledged their commitments to YOG by penning down what they would do for YOG on coloured cards and these were prominently displayed as our school’s commitment in support of the YOG. The four arenas namely, Arena Xpress, Arena Xtract, Global Arena and Steps of Excellence serve as learning centres for our pupils and visitors to get the latest sporting updates, countdown to YOG, history of the Olympics, interesting facts and also inspirational sporting icons as their role models.

Volvo Ocean Race

3 teachers and 37 students visited the Volvo Ocean Race Village on 14th January 2009.  We got a close look at the Volvo Open 70, the yachts that raced around the world.  We also experienced the life of a sailor onboard a Volvo Open 70 through simulators and dialogues with the sailors themselves.

CAN! Event - YOG Logo Launch

4 teachers and 43 students supported the launch of the YOG logo at SMU Green on 10th January 2009.  The YOG logo was launched by Dr Vivian Balakrishan, Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports.  The logo represents the "Spirit of Youth", an important symbol.  During the launch, our students managed to try out some Olympic sports, namely wrestling, equestrian and fencing.  These 3 sports are currently uncommon among primary schools.

Home Coming of Scott Ang & Max Ang

Shuqun Primary School had the privilege of the home coming of our 2005 and 2008 Shuqunite Sports Person of the year, Scott Ang and Max Ang on 20th February 2009. Through our school’s supportive sporting and learning environment, Both Scott and Max performed extremely well in triathlons and in their studies to earn them a place in the Singapore Sports School. Scott is also a potential candidate for a place in the Youth Olympic Games Triathlon team. They were in Shuqun Primary School to encourage our young Shuqunites to participate in the Youth Tryathlon 2009. An assembly programme and class interaction sessions allowed young Shuqunites to rub shoulders with the sport stars.

Sports Carnival 2009

2)   Sports Carnival 2009 Reflections

Shuqun Primary School held its inaugural Sports Carnival at Jurong West Stadium on Thursday, 9th April 2009. In previous years, we held annual athletic meets with both track and field events. The objective this year is to prepare our pupils and gear them up for YOG 2010. The strategic planning and organisation by the committee and with the support of the Parent Support Group (PSG), parents and pupils have made this event successful.

We had our first Torch Relay. The Torch Relay marked the opening and celebration of the Sports Carnival. The President of the Student Council and the representatives of each level were given this honour to participate in this relay. They were escorted by various sports CCA members around the track. This was also the first time we carried our favourite track events for Primary 3 to 6 and relays for Primary 1 and 2 on the same day. With the entire school and parents present at the stadium, the vibrancy of the event had increased tremendously compared to previous year. May this vibrancy and support continue to grow as YOG 2010 draws nearer.

1st Asian Youth Games Cultural Booth

Under the YOG/AYG Culture & Education Programme (CEP), Shuqun Primary, together with Commonwealth and Unity Secondary School, were selected to set up and man the cultural booth during the AYG. This was in line with the twinning programme with Bahrain and Bermuda for YOG 2010.

Three student councilors, Yu Siyue (5C3), Nur Wahidah (5C3) and Shafiq Jumain (5B1) were selected to participate in this once in a lifetime opportunity. These AYG ambassadors researched and presented their perspective on the culture and interesting facts of Bahrain through posters they created for the CEP booth at Raffles City. In the process, they learnt a lot more about Bahrain and its people. They even sourced out for costumes and picked up a few Arabic phrases to greet and converse with the visitors and athletes.

YOG 1 year countdown cum Olympic Day run 2009

The runners cheered and surged forward at the sound of the horn. Flanked by other primary school pupils as well as older pupils from secondary schools and tertiary institutions, Shuqunites from ODAC and the Health & Fitness Club mingled enthusiastically in the throng setting off from the Marina Bay Floating Platform. Led by Mr Edward Yeo, Mr Foo Yoong Heng and Mdm Betty Kang, they were taking part in the 2-kilometre Olympic Day Run, part of the ‘One Year Countdown Event’ celebrating 365 days to the first-ever Youth Olympic Games (YOG) in 2010!

Curious locals and tourists stopped in their tracks as the youthful runners took the scenic route along the Singapore River and past stately government institutions. The final destination: the Padang where they would replenish their energies with yummy treats (kindly sponsored by McDonald’s). This was followed by game try outs at the games booths, where pupils were introduced to some of the different sports which would be included in the YOG. Some were also wowed by the impressive performances on the stage before heading back to school.

Shuqunites are proud to have been a part of this historical event and look forward to further supporting the YOG in 2010!
